Seek

Seek and you will find” has to be one of the most hammered to death sayings trotted out by people the world around.  Well that’s great.  I need another bit of ethereal advice like I need my finger nails pulled out.  So what does it mean?  This is what it means to me…

Seeking, by definition, means you don’t know where the item is that you are looking for.  If you did you would be engaged in navigation, moving from one waypoint to the next.  Interestingly enough radio manufacturers have used the term “Seek” to describe the process of locating a particular station on a given band (e.g. FM).   Even more interesting [to me] is what the transmitted signal looks like in a diagram.  I’ll spare you the technical stuff but it is basically represented by a straight horizontal line with a couple of curvy horizontal lines overlaid.  Herein lies my analogy.

The straight horizontal line is the direction my life is headed, and represents a life of faith (it is straight, no bends or jagged edges).  One wavy line is my “seeking”, the other wavy line is everybody else’s “seeking”.  Lost you yet?  Notice that my wavy line crosses the black line in places?  That’s my seeking hitting pay dirt!  Then, like a pendulum, I swing right past it.  The distance I swing past this “faith line” varies, as does the gap between the peaks and troughs in each of the wavy lines.  This tells me at times I am “finding faith” more often, but exploring further from it as I go.  These “high frequency” periods have high peaks and come back to cross the line more often, as I suddenly realise the place I am “seeking” does not contain what I am lloking for.  As the distance between the gaps shortens (flattens) I am spending more time closer to my life of faith (faith line), but actually hitting it less.  I spend more time there because I know what I am looking for is close!  Sorry if this is hard to absorb, but it is how I sometimes think.

So what’s my aim?  It has to be to “flatten” the frequency of my seeking so that it is closer to my “faith line”, and for longer periods.  The good news is that I feel covered (insured, paid up, without debt) for the periods I spend in “high frequency life”.  Why?  Because I have been told to seek!
